The Dilemma of the Formula one 2007 season
The world of formula 1 racing in 2007 season was a bit of a confusion mixed with joy for Ferrari, fatigue for Mclaren-mercedes. These two teams without a doubt dominated the world of racing in this year. With Miki Schumacher retiring on a good but not a victorious note, Ferrari roped in Finland’s Kimi Raikkonen for the No.1 driver spot and Felipe Massa retaining in the second spot. Mclaren-mercedes were having a great time as they roped in the Two-Time world champion Fernando Alonso for their No.1 driver spot and unknown rookie Lewis Hamilton Alonso’s no.2.
Other teams such as BMW, Renault and Honda were also with formidable drivers. The season began with a bang for Kimi as he won the first race at Australia. The first race clearly projected what would happen that season as the two Ferraris and two Mclaren-mercedes finished in top-four.
Then the dilemma began. World champion Alonso was clearly getting outplayed by his rookie teammate Lewis Hamilton. The following races saw the domination of Ferrari and Mclaren-mercedes. But Mclaren-mercedes was edging out Ferrari by small margin.
BMW was doing no harm to the toppers and it was going get the third spot for the championship. But the dilemma between Ferrari and Mclaren-mercedes was still continuing.
The season came to its last 6 races. Then the big dilemma began Ferrari appealed to the court of justice saying that Mclaren-mercedes have copied their BLUE PRINT design, which many people thought in the beginning of the season itself since both the cars had the same speed and process.
Many thought that Mclaren-mercedes will be denied of their championship points and their drivers will be deprived from their driver points. The hearing began and the judgment came as a shell-shocker for many people. The judgment said that “Mclaren-mercedes have found to be guilty in copying the blue-print of Ferrari so their championship points will be deprived. But their drivers won’t be denied of their points”
Ferrari was upset at the judgment since they wanted the reduction in points of Mclaren-mercedes drivers.
At that stage Lewis Hamilton, the rookie was leading the points table with his team mate Fernando Alonso, The world champion behind him. The Two Ferraris Raikkonen and Massa were behind them. Day by day the relationship between the two Mercedes drivers was bittering
The season came to its final two races. Lewis Hamilton as everyone thought was going for the championship some thought that if Alonso wins both the races and Hamilton does the two poorly then there is a chance for Alonso to win the championship.
The first of the last two races begun and Ferrari’s Raikkonen won it with a clear lead and still it was too difficult for him to go for the championships.
The final race came and a critical situation arose. If Hamilton finishes within first 8 spot which was considered easy then he can win the championships without any disturbance. If at all Hamilton finishes behind 8 and then if Alonso finishes within 3 then he can win the championships.
Things were getting difficult for Raikkonen if only Hamilton finishes behind 8th and Alonso behind 3rd and he winning the race then only there is a chance for Raikkonen
Things got worse for Ferrari as Hamilton qualified in No.1 spot in the Saturday’s qualifying session. The Sunday’s countdown began and Hamilton who many thought was the winner went into a clear lead. Then surprisingly Hamilton who never got a major failure in the season got a Gear-box failure and slipped to 12th spot. Alonso was also struggling in fourth spot behind the two Ferraris Raikkonen in two and Massa in lead. Hamilton was struggling to get into the top 8 from which he can sweep the Championships. He fought and came into top 9 with still 20 more laps to go but the BMWs were giving him a hard time out. The race was still lead by Massa he in his hometown was going for a kill. Then suddenly in a Pit stop Massa delayed himself and gave the lead to his Team-mate Raikkonen who have a good chance of winning the championship. Then Raikkonen went into lead and Alonso stuck behind 3rd and Hamilton never got a chance to get into the top 8. A dramatic race ended and Raikkonen who no one thought was going to win the title won it and scored 110 points just one point away from both Alonso and Hamilton who both had 109 points
The Team work was the only factor that separated the two teams. Hamilton and Alonso never worked with team mate while Massa gave his No.1 spot in front of his home fans to his team mate Raikkonen for the sake of his team. Ferrari clean sweeped both the Championship and Drivers titles.
The Fuel Controversy:
The controversial 2007 season ended but the controversies did not. Mclaren-mercedes proposed that the BMWs whom costed Hamilton the title were using over-heated fuels in their tanks which were not permitted by the laws of formula 1 racing. But the stewards said that they checked and only then they allowed the fuel to be used. This controversy ended and Raikkonen still was staying as the World champion.
Epilogue:
Hamilton was regarded as the new sensation of the Formula one racing and Alonso who came to Mclaren-mercedes as the world champion decided to quit the team. Ferrari was still a dream for Alonso he had no option but to go back to his old team Renault. Ferrari did not change anything and it stayed with its two drivers Raikkonen and Massa. Mclaren-mercedes gave the No.1 spot to Hamilton and made Heikki kovalainen as its No.2 driver. BMW team retained Heidfeild and Robert kubica in their team.
Since the two controversial team mates Alonso and Hamilton are going to face each other in an orderly way the controversies are still going to continue. But it will be the Ferrari-Mercedes controversies that will rule the Formula 1 world with BMW chipping in. A grand feast of F1 racing is awaiting its viewers
