Federer Advances
Hewitt demolished in straight sets by the defending champ!
Federer thruped Hewitt in a 7-6 6-2 6-4 victory over the 2002 champion. Australian Hewitt, the only men’s winner in the draw other than five-times champion Federer, kept the Swiss on his toes during a tight first set.
“He served extremely well today. Any quarter chances that I did get, I didn’t have them for long,” said the former world number one, who has now not won a title for 16 months.
By reaching the quarter-finals without dropping a set in this year’s event, the Swiss not only grabbed a 12th successive win over the Australian but also ensured he would keep the world number one ranking when the new list is published next Monday.
Nadal still alive!
French Open champion Rafael Nadal survived an early scare when he needed treatment to his right calf before beating Mikhail Youzhny 6-3 6-3 6-1 on Monday to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals.
The second seed, 1-0 up after serving first, slipped and landed badly on his right leg chasing a crosscourt shot and needed a time-out for treatment on the side of Court One.
However, it proved a blip and the 22-year-old Spaniard crushed an opponent he needed five sets to overcome at the same stage of Wimbledon a year ago. He next meets Frenchman Richard Gasquet or Briton Andy Murray in the last eight.
Nadal told reporters later that he had had a fright when he felt pain behind the knee but doctors had established there was no serious injury.
Williams Going wild
Four-time champion Venus played first, making a high-noon entrance on the court known for its history of upsets and beating Alisa Kleybanova 6-3, 6-4. Ninety minutes later, two-time Serena joined her older sister in the quarterfinals by defeating American Bethanie Mattek 6-3, 6-3.
Neither sister has lost a set in the tournament, and the chances of a sibling showdown in the final keep improving as a wave of upsets take out other title contenders. The fourth round claimed No. 2-seeded Jelena Jankovic and No. 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova, leaving No. 5 Elena Dementieva as the highest-seeded survivor among the final eight
So everything looks bright for a all williams final!
